Crystal Cave Tubing Adventure from Belize City with Lunch
What this cave tubing day actually looks like
Float through a cave network that few visitors to Belize City ever reach. The whole trip runs about five and a half hours from pickup to drop-off, and the reward is a slow drift through enormous chambers, headlamp on, with natural crystal formations passing overhead.
Your guide hands out helmets, lights and life jackets first. Then comes a gentle 20 to 25 minute walk through the rainforest at your own pace, ending at the cave mouth where the water is clear and spring-fed. Anyone who wants a swim before getting on a tube can take one. Staff carry the tubes to the entrance, so you walk unloaded.
Tubes here come with a mesh seat bottom, a backrest and a headrest. Once everyone is settled, your certified guide leads the group into Xibalba, the Maya underworld, pointing out crystallized walls, towering columns and Maya pottery fragments left in the chambers over a thousand years ago. You drift past an underground waterfall, step out at the cave exit, and float the final open-air stretch downstream to the parking area. Lunch afterwards is local cooking: rice and beans, stew chicken, veg cole slaw. Honestly, after cold cave water, it lands well.

1. Pickup in Belize City
Cruise passengers meet the guide at FSTV Terminal 1, street side; the tour starts one hour after your ship arrives in port, which leaves room for the tender ride in. City hotels, the airport and water taxi terminals are also served. Hotel pickups begin before the listed departure time, so be ready early.
2. Scenic drive inland
A roughly one-hour drive carries you from the coast into the country’s lush interior. This is the point to sort out water shoes if you haven’t brought your own — they’re required and can be rented on site.
3. Gear up and walk in
Life jacket, safety helmet and headlamp get fitted before you set off. The rainforest path to the cave entrance takes about 20 to 25 minutes at an easy pace, and your tube is portaged to the launch site for you.
4. Swim at the cave entrance
Clear, spring-fed water sits right at the mouth of the cave. Take a dip if you want one; it’s a good warm-up before the float.
5. Inside Xibalba
Your guide leads the group into the Maya underworld. Expect sparkling crystal formations, hidden chambers reached on foot, an underground waterfall, a crystallized “frozen” waterfall feature and a rock formation shaped like a jaguar. Pottery shards over a thousand years old sit along the route.
6. Downstream float and lunch
A relaxing 10-minute open-air float brings you back to the parking area. Lunch is served after: rice and beans, stew chicken, veg cole slaw. Then you’re transferred back to the cruise port, your hotel or the water taxi terminal.
Practical heads-up: water shoes are required and not included — bring them or rent on site. Minimum height is 50 inches and minimum age is 13, and all children’s heights must be advised at the time of booking. Skip this one if you have back problems, spinal injuries, heart complaints or poor cardiovascular health, or if you’re pregnant. A moderate level of fitness is expected. Booking closes 60 minutes before the start time.
